Never Say Never Again -james Bond 007- May 2026

However, Kershner clashed constantly with the producers. McClory wanted a pure remake; Connery wanted to deconstruct the myth; Kershner wanted a psychological thriller. The result is a fascinating Frankenstein. The tone lurches violently from cartoonish (Fatima Blush feeding a man to a shark via a waterslide) to grim (Bond strangling a man with a medical respirator). One glaring absence is the iconic James Bond theme composed by Monty Norman and arranged by John Barry. Because EON Productions held the rights to the musical score of the official series, Never Say Never Again could not use the famous guitar riff.

Instead, composer (famous for The Thomas Crown Affair and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg ) produced a lush, jazz-infused, romantic score. It is beautiful, sophisticated, and feels utterly wrong for James Bond. The main title song, sung by Lani Hall (wife of Herb Alpert), is a soft-rock ballad with no punch. The lack of the signature brass stabs makes the action sequences feel oddly quiet. For many fans, this is the film’s single greatest sin. The Box Office Verdict: Who Won the 1983 War? When Never Say Never Again finally opened in October 1983 (a month after Octopussy ), the press went into a frenzy. It was Bond vs. Bond. Roger Moore vs. Sean Connery. The official franchise vs. the outlaw. Never Say Never Again -James Bond 007-

By the late 1970s, McClory decided to exercise that right. Simultaneously, Sean Connery—who had famously sworn he would “never again” play James Bond after the exhausting shoot of You Only Live Twice (1967) and the disastrous The Shaws of Kilbride fiasco—was offered a king’s ransom. The offer was a staggering $5 million (over $15 million today) plus a percentage of the gross, making him the highest-paid actor in Hollywood at the time. However, Kershner clashed constantly with the producers

Look at the famous “Riding the Bomb” sequence in Dr. No ? Never Say Never Again reverses it. Bond is forced to ride a nuclear warhead on a test drive through a missile silo, but it’s not heroic; it’s terrifying. The camerawork is shaky, the lighting is harsh, and Connery’s face is a mask of genuine panic. The tone lurches violently from cartoonish (Fatima Blush

The results were a statistical draw. Octopussy grossed $187.5 million worldwide. Never Say Never Again grossed $160 million. Given that the renegade film cost less to make and Connery took a massive upfront salary, it was considered a financial success. Critically, reception was mixed. Critics loved Connery’s charisma and the novel “aging hero” theme but decried the sluggish pacing and cheap-looking production design (the film feels more like a 70s TV movie than a lavish Bond epic).
